The Great Gap

Note: A slight adaptation of the origin story from Norse Mythology. Its not the whole story, yet it is the beginning, and one that always speaks to me, as a Norse Pagan

I’ve seen many things, heard many a tale. Now let me share one that I have learned well. From the Beginning in times before time, a story of creation here you will find.

In a time before man was ever born, the world was barren and quite forlorn. A great gap, a yawning void. Ginnungagap was its name, and it shall have eternal fame.

There was no grass, or living thing, within this chasm we have named. on either side lay a desolate land, opposite yet always at hand.

On one side blew the frigid cold, of Niflheim that icy abode. From the other flared forth great sparks. The fiery heat of Muspelheim warmed one’s heart.

Hvergelmir, the icy spring, came forth from Niflheim with great pain. Its rivers flowed, made a drizzling rain, and into the gap did they drain.

Over time they froze and crusted, making a rime within the gap, filling it up till it was flat.

Then the sparks, fiery and hot, which every way did dart, fell into that icy rime and burned it deep without care.

poison water sprang from this, and within something was amiss. they stirred around every which way, for the forces of life were no longer at bay.

an icy form came here now, one like a man you see, and Ymir would his name be.
