There was once two young Rabbits, whose names where Shella Bunny and Ginger Rabbit. They were adorable. From their little button noses, to their floppy big ears, and down to their little cotton tails.
Ginger and Shella had a problem however. Sometimes it was actually a BIG problem! They liked jokes, they loved tricks of any kind. Both absolutely loved to play them on everyone. Even each other!
Now one of these little rabbits was trouble. But put them together and watch out! It was double the trouble. There was no telling what they would do, or to who. Everyone worried what that would come up with, and who would clean up the mess they made.
Once Shella caught Papa Rabbit with his back turned and Snip! She cut off the top of his cotton tail with scissors! Papa Rabbit was not very happy with Shella that day. She was in a lot of trouble.
Another time Ginger Rabbit caught Mrs. Hen taking a rest with her eggs. Slipping up with a sneaky grin Ginger borrowed her eggs. She painted them all up and hid them for an Easter Egg hunt. Only, it was’nt Easter! Mrs. Hen was terribly upset, and so was Pappa Rabbit. He had to wash off all the eggs.
Then there was poor Mr. Tom. The big old cat from up the road. Mr. Tom loved to nap by the lake. Until Ginger and Shella both came to play one day. They slipped right up to Mr. Tom and squealed. Mr. Tom was so badly scared that he jumped right in the lake! Papa Rabbit had to fish him out. He was very mad and both little rabbits were in BIg Big trouble.
Ginger and Shella kept playing pranks, and kept getting into trouble for it. Papa Rabbit was exhausted from trying to make them behave. He would sit down in his big comfy chait at night and just sigh. One of these days these little rabbits will get themselves into such a mess doing this. He would think. And you know what? He was right.
One fine summer day, Ginger and Shella went out to play. They had not been out for a while, there had been a slight incident in the kitchen, and Papa Rabbit had grounded them both. They both giggled still when they thought of the carrot cake he wore for a hat that day! It was so funny!
The sun was shining and both small rabbits jumped about happily. They pranced and laughed, and played hard, almost like mad. But like all little rabbits would do, they soon got bored in their yard. They wanted to explore.
Now both knew they were never supposed to go over the fence at the top of the hill into the big field alone. The grass was high there, and no one could see them. Always Papa Rabbit made sure that they only went when he was with them, since he could see over the grass to find them. But, Papa was still inside, and he would never know. So off they went.
Up the hill they streaked, moving in bouncing leaps over one another giggling away. Up, up, up, all the way to the fence. With a huge leap they cleared it, landing straight in the field, grass over their heads. What fun they would have here! Ginger ducked down out of sight, low to the ground.she slipped up on Shella and jumped out! Shella squealed in fright.
Now it was Shellas turn to do the same. Down low, back behind Ginger she took a run and a great leap. Up over Ginger’s head, and popped her ears with hers! Ginger yelled and swiped at her, laughing as she gave chase. Very soon, neither of them could see the fence, and certainly not home.
It was then that they heard it. A strange noise of some kind. Whatever could it be they wondered? It was a quiet humming sound, and a rustling of the grass. They looked at each other and grinned. Someone else was in the grass with them, just out of sight. It was fun time, they thought, as they nodded and got ready to scare them.
They crept quietly up towards the stranger, trying hard to not make any noise, and not certainly not giggle at all! They were very close now, something orange was just ahead of them. Ginger and Shella looked at each other, and a sneaky grin spread wide across their little faces. They could see the stranger now, just ahead. He was big, much bigger than them, and orange. How strange. But oh well it was fun time.
Right up behind the stanger they crept, then split up to be on either side of him. Ginger held up her paw. One, two, three! Both little rabbits leaped forward screaming “BOO!” at the top of their lungs. They just knew the newcomer would be scared and jumping.
Except,he didnt jump. One ear twitched, then the other. Now he turned to them. Big bushy tail curled up around him, flicking this way and that. He had a pointed face, and sneaky eyes, and big sharp…teeth! Oh no, it was a fox!
THe old Fox looked at the little rabbits, and they looked back. Ginger and Shella were shaking, not a fox, what would they do? The Fox grinned at them, showing even more of his teeth. He spoke then. Just a single word. “Dinner!”
That was all it took. Before the word was finished Ginger and SHella were off like rockets, racing for home. The fox was right behind them, licking his lips and cackling happily. Across the field they raced desperate to get back home. They would not be lunch today!
The fox chased hard, Ginger and Shella heard him crashing along behind them, big thuds as he leaped, then missed them. He was going to catch them, they knew it. They ran this way, then that, lost in the tall grass in fright. Oh where was the fence!?
Then they found it, and they leaped over it as they never had before. They came crashing down on the other side, squealing with all their might for Papa. Shella tripped, and hit Ginger, knocking both rabbits to the ground. They rolled down the hill then, like little balls of fur and grass, the fox trying and failing to grab them. They shot through the door and landed in a heap next to the fireplace.
With a Slam and a heavy Thud, Papa Rabbit had shut the door. Old Mr. Fox was not quite quick enough to stop, and bit the door. He had acouple teeth get stuck, and left them behind. He cross indeed when he got away. Now he was hungry and toothless!
Papa Rabbit looked at his little ones, glad they were safe. He asked them where they had been and was very stern with them once they told him. Grounded of course. Little Rabbits should not wander off by themselves! As for Ginger and Shella, they were happy to be grounded for once, and glad to be safe and sound at home. They decided they would be good little rabbits now…well maybe for a little while. THE END
